Western Skies "Soundtrack" Fanmix

As anyone who has read Western Skies has noticed, music is a very big point of inspiration for me. :) This is going to be the sappiest fanmix ever. Sorry, cool hip people, this collection consists of music that ranges back over 40 years, with really nothing after 2005. No shiny tunes here. :P

Because I have both Jim and Chris able to sing in the story [directly inspired by Bruce Greenwood's own musical side] (Chris is also able to play guitar, and John is pretty good with a bass, although he's more backup singer material) in the story, I've mentally given them "singing voices." I've pretty bluntly stated Jim's in the story. So in short:

Jim = John Denver (smooth and sweet, with a good range, can be raspy as needed :P)
Chris = Elton John (all around awesome, able to sing both smoother tones and gravelly ones)

Feel free to die of laughter. I know I'm weird. :P

I suppose the weird point of this mix is that it consists both of the songs that directly inspired me for the series, and some of the songs "performed" in the fic itself. Hey, it's more music. That's always good. :D

Note: The only songs I ripped myself for this collection are the two exclusively Elton John ones. Those two are 320kbps. The others vary in quality, but are all pretty good. :)

Theme Songs for the Entire Fic:

Johnny Cash & U2 - Wanderer

If you've never heard this song before, listen to it. It's pretty self-evident why it's here (although feel free to not focus on the religious themes. I'm not focusing on them either.) This is the song that got me writing.

Elton John - American Triangle

Written as a tribute to Matthew Shepard, this song has some amazing imagery and ideas that I've definitely thought about WS, on discrimination and history.

Jim's Theme:

John Denver - The Eagle and the Hawk

This is Jim in the story. 'nuff said. I tend to think of the song as a progression. :)

Chris's Theme:

Queen & Elton John - The Show Must Go On

This is actually the song I imagine for post!Narada Pike in general, not just for this fic. This is the performance from the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert, and it has an incredible undercurrent of emotion that just makes me shiver. Listen to him at the 2:04 mark.

The song Jim would totally sing to Bones if he was plastered or lost a bet:

John Denver - Annie's Song

It's utterly and completely sappy, but has a lot of nature imagery that would totally be this Jim's thing. It would have to be one hell of a bet, though. Jim's got a rep to maintain, you know. ^_~

Chris and Jim's Theme:

Rascal Flatts - Life is a Highway

The newest song on here, and completely fitting from Jim's POV Post-"Road-trip". I think of it as the apology song. XD The song is open enough with its terms that I can listen to it with a familial love bent instead of romantic. :P

Chris and Jim's Anti-Theme:

Harry Chaplin - Cats in the Cradle

It's pretty self-explanatory.

The song I totally imagine for Chris and John:

Elton John - Someday Out of the Blue

Someday out of the blue
Maybe years from now
Or tomorrow night
I'll turn and I'll see you
As if we always knew
Someday we would live again, someday soon

No words needed. :)

As Seen in the Story:

B.B. King - How Blue Can You Get?

John Denver - Rocky Mountain High

I've seen it raining fire in the sky

This song makes me think nu!Kirk in general, honestly.

ZZ Top - La Grange

Roy Orbison - (all i can do is) Dream You

ZZ Top - Sharp Dressed Man

Roy Orbison - Dream Baby

ZZ Top - Gimme All Your Lovin'

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band & John Denver - And So It Goes

This is the song Jim sings to Carol in the story. :)

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band & Friends - Will the Circle Be Unbroken

...ever since I thought that Roy Acuff sounded a lot like Leonard Nimoy in this (second solo,) this turned into a tribute song to Amanda. Hey, you never know, maybe she liked Bluegrass music.

EDIT 01.28.10 - I wanted to add the song mentioned about halfway through part 5. As I don't want to reupload the big file, you'll need to download this file separately by clicking on the name.

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band & Emmylou Harris - Mary Danced With Soldiers

...depending on the fic, this can practically be Winona's theme song, or not. In this case...I'll let you decide.

Love this mix! I've got a fair share of Elton John and John Denver stuff around here and I absolutely don't mind the connections *G*

And Bruce Greenwood has a really gorgeous singing voice. Love it!

.oOP.S. My current Draws writing song is "Wonder of You" by Elvis *palms face* *G*

Heee~ we all get our inspiration from somewhere, yeah? :D

I gave "Chris" a bit different of a singing voice than Bruce, but that's alright. I'm sure Bruce could sing ZZ Top if he wanted to. XD

Ah...Elvis. Always a nice time. :)

Heee I'm so downloading this. I swear, my music taste is a little bit of everything. I love it.

Now stop distracting me from my science, woman! Haha <333

...I need a Bruce icon, but I have no space :(

You'll notice a lot of familiar lines in the Johnny Cash song. :P

Bribe someone to get you a paid account! :D
Jan. 17th, 2010 03:13 pm (UTC)
I think I'm going to have to. I'm trying to see if I can wait until my birthday (May 12) and ask for a paid account as a present, but then again I don't like asking things of people. IDK.

Yay for procrastination!

And then I of course realize 'oh yeah, not finished yet, 46k out of 60k and she already has a beta and I can't be a second pair of eyes.

My face looks like this for a few seconds: :D

And then like this when I remember it's not done: D":

And then like this when I'm like /almost maybe kinda sorta done/: >D

I'm still honored (and slightly worried) that you are excited for the next installment. XD (I'm just hoping it doesn't suck at this point.)

Well, I'm happily introducing the younger generation (ie. YOU. :P) to old school music in the mean time. XD
Jan. 31st, 2010 12:37 am (UTC)
Oh these are lovely. *keeps page open for descriptions while I listen* Plus I have loved John Denver since I was a wee bairn, so the fact that Jim feels the same way tickles me to no end.
Jan. 31st, 2010 12:46 am (UTC)
Jim didn't think so at first, he thought he was lame when he was a teen. :P (Pt2)

I'm glad you enjoyed! :D

I really love some of the songs in this, so thank you!

Though after imagining Chris singing some of these (especially the one for him and John) I can no longer understand how John has managed NOT to fuck Chris in the bushes after that concert or to topple him off the couch on any occasion he heard him sing! (I totally would have!) This also made me think that you've mentioned Jim singing for Bones (this now has to be in the fic, you promised!!! ;)), but not Chris for John. I think that the song you mentioned would not just make a nice description of how they would get together, but could also be the catalyst!

If Jim really sings that song for Bones and put some honest emotions into it I think it'll get Bones pretty choked up!
Feb. 1st, 2010 08:39 pm (UTC)
By which I also mean that I petition for Chris and John to get together as soon as possible, so that they've got something steady/stable going when the Narada shit goes down!
Of course they already have their friendship, but personally I think that even if the incident might produce the push to make them realize that they don't have forever, it also means that Chris won't be in any condition to really do anything about it and that would mean that we won't get to see them "together" together for a rather long time (I assume).

Of course you've probably got your own opinions on all of this and I don't mean to crimp your style. I look forward to finding out what's gonna happen!
Feb. 1st, 2010 11:34 pm (UTC)
All I'm going to say to this entire comment is that my beta is probably cackling right now. XD

Feb. 1st, 2010 11:33 pm (UTC)
I'm glad you aren't too scared by my old lady music. :P

...when did I promise Jim singing to Bones? XD I demand proof! ;)

I plead all levels of the fifth for anything else in here. No promises. :P
Feb. 2nd, 2010 10:38 pm (UTC)
Well, if liking the music means I'm an old Ladyx, that probably makes it more age appropriate for me to go all UHGGG inside every time I listen to "Someday ootB" and imaging it's Chris singing it. (Seriously dangerous image!) So, it's all good!

(My taste in music, as far as it can be called a taste is quite mockable enough in parts without anybody's help, so I really don't blame you.)
Feb. 2nd, 2010 10:52 pm (UTC)
Also, I now have this incredibly funny image in my head of Gaila (or someone along those lines, but she fits best I think) seeing Chris sing (that Commodore whose name I forgot just know beat him into a small on campus performance, Gaila's visiting Jim?) and going all "HOT!!!!" in fron of Jim who's just "EWWWWW", and she's all "shut up, he only has eyes for Adm. Archer anyways (also in the audience), but let me dream a little, because "HOT"" and Jim's still "EWWWWWWWWWWW!"

Feb. 3rd, 2010 01:52 am (UTC)
Hahahahahaha, I'm glad you have amused you today :D

Feb. 3rd, 2010 02:00 am (UTC)
(Assumimg this was a reply to my second comment)

Then Gaila would be all "Well, actually the Admiral is really hot too! Do you think they'd let me join them sometime? Humans can be so irrationally hung up on monogamy sometimes..."
And Jim would go: "PLEASE stop NOW, causing severe mental scarring over here!"

And if Chris or John ever heard about any of it severe teasing of Jim causing even more psychological trauma would ensue!
That boy really has it hard! ;)
Feb. 3rd, 2010 02:57 am (UTC)
Jim wouldn't have a problem with Chris performing in public, but yes, I think he would rather not hear about Gaila "perving" on his dad (and John, by connection.) XDDD

I think that's a pretty natural reaction. :P

Feb. 3rd, 2010 03:18 am (UTC)
Oh, it's a perfectly natural reaction! I did say the poor boy has it hard! (I don't know what it says about me as a person that I can still find it amusing when it happens to other people ;)

(Did I give the impression that Jim'd have a problem with Chris performing? Because I didn't mean to.)

I think Gaila's exact statements might also depend on what exactly she knows about Jim's relationship with Chris. Because she knows the rumors aren't true, but if she hasn't found out about the father son thing (and depending what she's learned about human cultural taboos) there might be some comments in there about WHY those rumors aren't true, because "why wouldn't you want THAT" Jim??? (and would you share?) ;)

Will stop spamming you now, before I scare you too much with the contents of my brain.
Feb. 3rd, 2010 03:29 am (UTC)
I think I misread it. :P No problem XD

As for the whole Gaila bit: HAAHAHAHAHA So true XD

It's all good! I don't mind :P

Sep. 15th, 2010 11:40 pm (UTC)
Thanks for sharing
Sep. 16th, 2010 01:54 am (UTC)
Glad you liked! :D
Jan. 25th, 2011 01:11 am (UTC)
so, I usually don't listen to anyone here on this list... but I've got to agree with you on a lot of your choices (I YouTubed them special)... "Rocky Mountain High" is totally reboot Jim, and "Someday out of the Blue," is very much Archer/Pike's song. Sighs... now to anxiously await the next installment.
